THE INITIATIVES OF INDIAN COMMERCIAL BANKS FOR GOING GREEN By Murphin T Francis and Dr. Deepa Antony

Abstract

Green initiatives are the practices and guidelines taken by banks for reducing carbon footprint and promoting environment friendly banking. It aims to make banking processes as efficient and effective as possible, with zero or minimal impact on the environment. Green banking refers to how environment friendly the bank is, and how committed it is to green and ethical policies. Banks view climate change mitigation and environmental improvements as essential elements of a sustainable business. This belief embodies the banks approach on reduction of carbon emissions. Encouraging environmentally responsible investments and prudent lending should be one of the responsibilities of the banking sector. By offering cheap funds for adoption of green technologies will have a long term beneficial impact on the environment. Banks themselves can adopt green practices and thereby lead the way in this global initiative.
